JOSEPH P. TUMULTY, SR.
Joseph Patrick Tumulty, Sr., age 95, financial advisor and member of the Equitable Financial Services prestigious “Hall of Fame”, passed away on August 28, 2013. Mr. Tumulty was a resident of Silver Spring and a second-generation Washingtonian. A graduate of St. John’s College High School, he remained involved in the school’s alumni activities well into his nineties. He was a charter member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Silver Spring, MD. He had been a Lector and an Extraordinary Minister and a Presenter for the Cardinal’s Appeal at his Church. Most recently, Mr. Tumulty was a member of Resurrection Catholic Community in Silver Spring. He was the Past President and Ex-Officio member of the Board of the Anchor Mental Health Association. Mr. Tumulty was also Past President of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, Eastern Branch, which became integrated during his tenure, the Optimist Club of Washington and the Holy Family Seminary Guild. In 1984, during a pilgrimage to Rome for the Beatification ceremony of the founder of the Sons of the Holy Family, Blessed Josef Manyanet, S.F., Mr. Tumulty was honored with being the Lector in English, during a mass at St. Peters celebrated by His Holiness John Paul II. Mr. Tumulty was inducted into Equitable’s “Hall of Fame” in 1974. Though officially retired in 1982, he remained active, and over the years his awards were numerous. In 1992 he was enrolled in Equitable’s “Founders Circle”. In recent years, as an active resident of Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, Mr. Tumulty made numerous new friendships with residents and staff alike. Mr. Tumulty’s love and guidance of his family was extraordinary. His loss is a profound one for anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His survivors include his wife of 69 years, Alice Regina Long Tumulty, of Silver Spring; six children, Patricia Tumulty Flaccus (David) of Freeville, NY, Mary Alice Tumulty Jost (James) of Pinehurst, NC, Joseph Patrick Tumulty, Jr. (Colleen) of Thurmont, MD, Alicia Tumulty Peklo (Gary) of West Friendship, MD, Anne Tumulty Patsalosavvis (Costas) of Gainesville, VA and Thomas Paul Tumulty (Steve Brown) of Cary, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Lillian Tumulty Lanman, of Hilton Head, SC; his sister-in-law, Mary Dolan of Silver Spring; 13 grandchildren, Melissa Jost Stalvey (Chris), Jessica Jost Costanzo (Ryan), Amanda Tumulty, Joshua Peklo (Marion), Gillian Flaccus Irving (Douglas), Joseph Patrick Tumulty III, Maria Peklo, Mark Tumulty, Daphne Patsalosavvis Quear (Michael), John Tumulty (Connie), George Patsalosavvis, Paul Tumulty and Mary Alice Patsalosavvis, as well as ten great grandchildren, Joanna and Mary Elena Morales, Matthew and Catherine Stalvey , Henry, Emma and Ophelia Grace Peklo, Elise and Emma Irving and Nora Costanzo. He is also survived by numerous beloved nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call at COLLINS FUNERAL HOME, 500 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring, MD. (Valet Parking) on Monday, September 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Relatives and friends may also call at the Riderwood Chapel, 3110 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, MD on Tuesday, September 3, 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Riderwood Chapel. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
